Pay Scale / Grade Pay / Status of Post:
Assistant conservator of Forest: Rs. 15600/- to Rs. 39100/-, Grade Pay- Rs. 5400/-, Group “B”, Gazetted.
Range Forest Officer: Rs. 9300/- to Rs. 34800/-, Grade Pay – Rs. 4800/-, Group “B”, Gazetted.
Marital Status:
Male candidates who are married and have more than one wife living and female candidates who have married a person already having a wife, shall not be eligible unless the Hon’ble. Governor has granted an exemption from this condition.
Preferential Qualification:
A candidate who has: (I) Served in the Territorial Army for a minimum period of two years, or (II) Obtained a ‘B’ Certificate of National Cadet Corps, or (III) Represented the state in any game, shall, other things being equal, be given preference in the matter of direct recruitment.
What Does a Forest Ranger Do?
Forest Ranger is trained to handle many of the situations that may arise in the forest. He supervises the work of timber extraction, camp organization, survey, road and tramline aligning constructions, regeneration survey, plantation, nursery, conversion of timber in mill, timber disposal, timber export, depot organization, marking, enumeration and other preliminary works. While this is often a part of the job, forest rangers may be involved in a wide range of activities, including:
- Planting seedlings
- Monitoring seedling growth and inspecting tree stands for signs of pests and disease
- Spraying or injecting pesticides to protect trees and shrubs
- Counting numbers of trees examined during forest inventories
- Removing diseased trees with hand or power equipment
- Loading cut trees onto trucks
- Operating skidders and trucks
- Preventing fires through construction of fire lines
- Fighting forest fires
- Improving trails
- Conducting informational and educational programs
- Participating in search and rescue missions
- Maintaining and repairing agency vehicles
- Collecting GPS data with handheld global positioning systems (GPS) devices
Forest Ranger Eligibility Criteria
Age: Candidates between 18 years and 30 years of age are eligible to apply. The age limit varies from state to state.
Qualification: A candidate interested in becoming a forest ranger should possess degree in natural sciences, pure mathematics, geology, statistics, mechanical/civil/chemical engineering or agriculture.
The competitive exam has compulsory subjects which are general knowledge and English. The candidate also has to select two of the optional subjects from the various subject options given by different states.
The candidates also have to get through some of the physical standards like height of the candidate should be around 163 cms, chest 79 cm normal and expandable upto 5 cms. For the walking test the candidate has to cover 25kms in 4 hours. The parameters may differ from state to state.
The respective state/union territory governments are responsible for management of the cadre of forest range officers. Selection of forest range officers is done by the state public service commission by conducting a competitive exam.

Instructions to Candidate
- You will not be allotted a different Roll No. for the Main exam. You will use the roll number issued to you at the time of Preliminary exam Registration
- The dates and venue for the Main examination shall be informed on the e-Admit cards.
- Candidates who clear the Main Examination will be called for the further process i.e. interview
- You will be required to mention the desired post at the time of Interview which will be treated final and no change therein will be worthy of being admitted.
- No application in this regard to error correction/modification shall be accepted
- Original certificates will be verified at the time of Interview.
- Carry four passport size Photographs, two unattested and two attested by Head of Department or Head of the Institution last attended
- Candidates employed in Central or State Government will produce a ‘No Objection Certificate’ from their employer issued by the competent authority.
