Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET)

Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) Entrance Exam directed in two parts which is called Exam 1 and Exam 2 and it is prepared by both Central government and State government in India. Qualifications for a person to be eligible for appointment as a teacher in any of the schools referred to in clause (n) of section 2 of the RTE Act is that he/she should pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) which will be conducted by the appropriate Government.

TET or Teacher Eligibility Test is an exam conducted at national and state levels to determine the eligibility of candidates for their appointment as teachers in central or state schools. Every year, lakhs of aspirants from different parts of the country appear for TETs with an aim to get recruited for any of the following teaching posts:

  • Primary Teachers (PRTs): For classes I-V

  • Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs): For classes VI-X

  • Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs): For classes XI-XII

It may be noted that qualifying TET does not guarantee the recruitment of candidates in schools. However, once qualified, candidates only get eligible to apply for teaching jobs. To get the job, candidates have to go through the recruitment/ interview process of the school in which they are applying.

Examination Pattern and details

National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has initiated new regulation for those aspiring to become teachers in schools under Government, private, unaided and aided categories. In accordance with the provisions of subsection (1) of section 23 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has laid down the minimum qualifications for a person to be eligible for appointment as a teacher in class I to VIII.

The test will be conducted once a year, separately by state governments and the Central.

There are two levels of TETs. A candidate may choose either or both of the tests.1) Level 1 Test – This test is conducted for those who aspire to become a Primary teacher (Class I to V).2) Level 2 Test – These tests are conducted for those who aspire to become a Secondary Teacher (Class VI to VIII).

Central Teacher Eligibility Test CTET 

CBSE also conduct Central Teacher Eligibility Test CTET to be eligible to teach in the schools of the Central Government in India. States are free to conduct their own STET (State Teacher Eligibility Test) or honour CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test).

The CTET shall apply to schools of the Central Government (KVS, NVS, Central Tibetan Schools, etc.) and schools under the administrative control of UT’s of Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and NCT of Delhi.

CTET may also apply to the unaided private schools, who may exercise the option of considering the CTET. 

State Level Teacher Eligibility Test –STET is eligibility test conducted by State. STET will be a compulsory and essential requirement for securing a teaching job in all types of schools. State Governments / Union Territories have to draw guidelines to this effect as per the norms laid down by NCTE. Schools owned and managed by the State Government/local bodies and aided schools shall consider the TET conducted by the State Government. However, a State Government can also consider the CTET if it decides not to conduct the State TET.

CTET Eligibility for Paper I

  • Candidate must have passed senior secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks.
  • Also, he/she must have passed or appearing in final year of 2- year Diploma in Elementary Education

OR

  • Applicants must have passed senior secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 45% marks.
  • He/she must have passed or appear in final year of 2- year Diploma in Elementary Education, in accordance with NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure), Regulations, 2002.

OR

  • Aspirants must have passed senior secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks.
  • They must also pass or appear in final year of 4- year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed).

OR

  • Candidates must have passed senior secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks.
  • Alog with it, they must have a pass certificate of 2- year Diploma in Education (Special Education)*.

OR

  • Graduation degree in relevant discipline must be acquired.
  • A certificate of two year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known).

CTET Eligibility for Paper II

  • A graduate degree in relevant discipline must be obtained.
  • Also, candidate must have passed or appear in final year of 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known).

OR

  • A bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks must be acquired.
  • Aspirants must have completed 1-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed).

OR

  • Graduation with at least 45% marks must be done in relevant discipline.
  • He/she must also complete a year in Bachelor in Education (B.Ed), in accordance with the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Regulations issued from time to time in this regard.

OR

  • Candidates must pass Senior Secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks
  • Also, they must have either passed or appearing in final year of 4- year Bachelor in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed).

OR

  • Candidates must have passed senior secondary (or its equivalent) with at least 50% marks.
  • Along with it, they must have passed or should be appearing in final year of 4- year B.A/B.Sc.Ed or B.A.Ed/B.Sc.Ed.

OR

  • Aspirants must have done graduation with at least 50% marks.
  • Also, they should have passed or appearing in 1-year B.Ed. (Special Education)*.

CTET Exam Pattern

CTET exam consists of 2 papers – Paper 1 (Primary Stage) and Paper 2 (Elementary Stage)

  • Paper 1 is for candidates who intend to become a teacher for classes 1 to 5.

  • Paper 2 is for candidates who wish to teach students from classes 6 to 8.

  • Every correct answer will be awarded +1 mark while negative marking scheme will not be applicable for the exam. Candidates can refer to the below table for CTET Exam Pattern highlights:
