Tamil Nadu Judiciary Notification 2025

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) is expected to release the notification for the Tamil Nadu Judicial Services Exam 2025 soon. This exam offers law graduates a chance to join the Tamil Nadu State Judiciary as Civil Judges. The notification will provide comprehensive details on eligibility, selection procedure, syllabus, and application steps for interested candidates.


Eligibility Criteria for Tamil Nadu Judicial Services Exam 2025

To be eligible, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Educational Qualification:

    • Candidates must hold a degree in law (LL.B.) from a recognized university approved by the Bar Council of India.
    • Experience Requirement:
      • For Fresh Law Graduates: No experience is required.
      • For Practicing Advocates/Assistant Public Prosecutors: Minimum of 3 years of experience in law practice is required.
  • Age Limit:

    • Fresh Law Graduates: 22-27 years.
    • Practicing Advocates/Assistant Public Prosecutors: 25-40 years.
    • Age relaxations may apply to reserved categories as per state government rules.
  • Nationality: The candidate must be an Indian citizen.


Selection Procedure

The selection process for Tamil Nadu Judicial Services is in three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Objective Type):

    • Serves as a screening test to qualify for the Mains examination.
  2. Mains Examination (Descriptive Type):

    • A written exam covering various law subjects to assess in-depth knowledge.
  3. Viva-Voce (Interview):

    • Candidates who clear the Mains exam are called for an interview to evaluate their legal knowledge, communication skills, and personality.
  4. Final Merit List:

    • The final merit list is prepared based on the Mains Examination and Interview scores.

Preliminary Examination:

    • General Knowledge, General Tamil/English
    • Law topics such as Constitution of India, Criminal Procedure Code, Civil Procedure Code, Evidence Act, and more.
  • Duration: 2 hours.
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Qualifying Marks: Candidates need at least 40% to qualify for the Mains.

Mains Examination:

  • Type: Descriptive written exam.
  • Papers:
    • Paper I: Translation (Translation of passages from English to Tamil and vice versa).
    • Paper II: Law Paper I (Civil Laws)
    • Paper III: Law Paper II (Criminal Laws)
    • Paper IV: Law Paper III (General Laws and Current Legal Developments)
  • Total Marks: 400 (100 marks per paper).
  • Duration for Each Paper: 3 hours.
  • Qualifying Marks: General category candidates must score 40% per paper; reserved category candidates need at least 35% per paper.

Viva-Voce (Interview):

  • Total Marks: 60
  • Purpose: Tests the candidate's communication, general awareness, legal acumen, and overall personality.

Selection Process

TNPSC Civil Judge Recruitment Selection Process

The selection process of the Civil Judge Recruitment involves three rounds as-

  • Preliminary Examination
  • Main Examination
  • Viva-voce Test

Details regarding all the three exams are given below. Candidates applying for the TNPSC Civil Judge Examination are required to go through the information below.

  • The phase one or Preliminary Examination is a written exam, objective in nature
  • The second phase or the Main Examination is written and descriptive in nature
  • The last round or Viva-voce round involves interaction between the candidate and the jury.
Exam Pattern

The TNPSC Civil Judge Exam consists of three levels. Any candidate who wishes to get recruited in the TNPSC Civil Judge needs to clear all the three levels. The first two levels are written exams. The third level is an oral viva.

TNPSC Preliminary Exam Pattern

The first stage of the TNPSC Civil Judge Examination is the Preliminary Exam. Candidates need to qualify the first exam first in order to appear for the second stage. Examination pattern of the Preliminary Exam is mentioned below.

  • The exam is written and conducted in offline mode
  • The exam paper is objective in nature.
  • The paper total consists of 100 questions.
  • For every correct answer 1 mark is given, and for every wrong answer 0.25 is deducted.
  • The paper is set in both English and regional level- Tamil.
  • Mandatory to pass this exam in order to sit in the second exam.

TNPSC Mains Exam Pattern

TNPSC Mains is the second stage of the TNPSC Civil Judge Examination. Only those who qualify the first round can appear in the second stage.

  • The exam is written and conducted in offline mode
  • The exam is descriptive in nature.
  • The paper is in both languages- Tamil and English.
  • The paper consists of a total of 4 sections.
  • All the sections consist of 100 marks.
